188 departments inĀ 58 universities have committed to running the UAS module. This has grown from a pilot scheme in 2002/3 involving 4 departments in 3 universities.
What are the benefits for departments?
- UAS offers undergraduates a way to gain important, marketable and transferable skills such as organisation, time management, presentation, communication and interpersonal skills, all of which will enhance their employability upon graduation
- Undergraduates have the opportunity to appreciate and understand their subject better through teaching it to others
- UAS provides an opportunity to build long-term relationships with local schools and therefore to improve subject recruitment both generally and, more particularly, in terms of departmental admissions
- Offering undergraduates the opportunity to explore teaching as a possible career may help to encourage the next generation of science, technology and maths teachers, thereby improving long-term subject recruitment
